Everyone knows that the French are roantic , the Italian are fashionable and the Gerans are serious . Or do they ? Are these just stereotypes or is there really such a thing as national character ? And if there is , can it affect how a nation succeed or fail ?
At least one group of people is certain that it can . A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (实业家) in the UK found that 70 percent felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public .
Britain is hostile to success , they said . It has a culture of jealousy (嫉妒) . As a result , the survey said , entrepreneurs were “unloved , unwanted and isunderstood” . Jealousy is soeties known as the “green-eyed onster” and the UK is its hoe . Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea . They gathered a group of people together and gave each an iaginary aount of oney . Soe were given a little , others a great deal . Those given a little oney were given the chance to destroy the large aounts of oney given to others—but at the cost of losing their own . Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this .
This sees to prove the entrepreneurs were right to coplain . But there is also conflicting evidence . The Organization for Econoic Cooperation and Developent (OECD) recently reported that the UK was now the world’s fourth largest econoy .That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success . People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe . So the British people are not lazy , either .
“It’s not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper , a Professor of anageent at the University of anchester Institute of Science and Technology . “It’s people using their success in a way that sees arrogant (傲慢) or unfair or which separates the fro their roots .”
Perhaps it is the entrepreneurs who are the proble . They set out to do things in their way . They work long hours . By their own efforts they becoe illionaires . But instead of being happy they coplain that nobody loves the . It hardly sees worth following their exaple . If they were ore friendly , people would like the ore . And ore people want to be like the .

A Battery’s Worst Nightare (噩梦)
Portable electronics that can be carried about easily are only as good as their batteries and , let’s face it , batteries aren’t very good , especially when copared with , say , petrol , which packs 100 ties a battery’s energy into an equal space . That’s why a large group of echanical engineers ( centered at the assachusetts Institute of Technology , but with partners at other universities and copanies ) are hard at work in an effort to replace batteries with a tiny engine that runs on fuel . Iagine a battery-free life ! When the fuel runs out in your laptop or obile phone , you just fill up and go .
The engine—about the size of a ten-cent coin-starts with a cobustion chaber (燃烧室) that burns hydrogen (氢). Its tiny parts are etched onto silicon wafers (硅片) in the sae anner that coputer parts are iprinted onto integrated circuits (集成电路). The first engine is ade up of five wafers . And since these wafers could be produced in uch the sae way as coputer chips , they could probably be produced quite cheaply .
But the devil in all this nice detail is efficiency (效率). Tiny engine parts don’t always behave like their scaled-up parts of the first engine . Soething between the parts can slow down the works , according to Colubia University professor Luc Frechette , one of the engine’s designers . Extree heat fro the cobustion chaber is also a proble , often leaking to other parts of the engine .
The scientists’ goal is to create an engine that will operate at 10 percent efficiency—that is , 10 ties better than batteries operate . Frechette says that a coplete syste , with all parts of place and working , will be set up in the next couple of years , but coercial odels aren’t likely until at least the end of the next ten years .

67.What is the ain purpose of this passage ?
