When I was three years old, my parents discovered I was totally deaf. But instead of sending me to a school for the deaf, they decided to “mainstream” me. All of my peers and teachers world have normal hearing.
I was the only deaf child at Blue Creel Elementary School. From almost the first day there, the other kids made fun of me mainly because of my hearing aid and the way I talked. And I also had difficulty with most of my school work.
When the other kids made fun of me, I was sure that I was a bad person. I saw myself as a boy who wasn’t smart enough to keep up with the class.
Mrs. Jordan, my 5th grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple three-word phrase.
One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips from my front-row seat and immediately raised my hand because I was sure I had the right answer. But when she called on me, I was afraid. Here was an opportunity to impress the powerful teacher and show her I was worthy of her love. Maybe even impress my classmates a little. I didn’t want to blow it. despite my fears, I took a deep breath and answered Mrs. Jordan’s question.
I will never forget what happened next. Mrs. Jordan enthusiastically slammed (跺动)her right foot on the floor and turned her tight hand around in full circle until it pointed directly at me. With sparking eyes and a wide smile she cried, “THAT’S RIGHT STEPHEN!”
For the first time in my young life, I was a star. I sat a little taller in my chair.
From that day forward, my grades and speech improved greatly. My popularity among my peers increased. It was all because Mrs. Jordan believed in me and wasn’t afraid to express it. “THAT’S RIGHT STEPHEN!”

House plants do more that just brighten up a room with color and living energy. Along with being pleasing to the eye, they bring real health benefits to your body. Not only do complaints about headaches, stress, and colds fall when indoor plants are present, but also they can help to keep the air clean.
A study in America found that common house plants could improve air quality. It was reported that houseplants were able to remove up to 87 percent of air toxins(有毒物质)in 24 hours.
House plants make people feel calmer and more optimistic, says Bruno Cortis, a professor from University of Chicago. Interestingly, he says that studies have shown that hospital patients who face a window with a garden view recovered more quickly than those who had to look at a wall.
According to the study of an agriculture university in Norway, indoor plants can reduce fatigue(疲劳), coughs, sore throats and other cold-related illnesses by more than 30 percent, by increasing humidity(湿度)levels and decreasing dust.
More and more companies and factories are beginning to catch on that adding plants indoors does wonders for employees’ health and morale(士气).According to one study published in Rehabilitation Literature, a design company placed plants in its office so that no employees would be more than 45 feet from greenery. The result? Company administrators said they noticed more creativity and increased productivity in employees.
On course, some plants are poisonous and should be handled with care, or not at all if you have small children. By using a little caution with the plants you choose, you can enjoy all the benefits that adding plants to your home will bring.

In order to achieve a goal we often learn more and more. But if feels like you knew less and less because when you learned something new, you found that there was a lot more to know about those things.
Often times, people will get stuck in this trap of needing to gather more and more informational. There’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, but when you let learning get in the way of doing, you will never get going. When you never get going, you still never start having the things you want in life. Too much learning can paralyze you in terms of taking action.
A better way to go about achieving a goal is to gather some information and immediately start taking action on the information you have gathered. I realize that many times you will feel unprepared, and that’s okay. The best way to learn is to take action and learn from the results you get from those actions.
When you are able to get past the fear of not being perfect and just take the first step, you will be further ahead than the majority of people who are still in the preparation stage. It’s good to be prepared especially in situations such as a pilot and crew making sure the plane is ready to take off, but over preparation in trying to reach a goal won’t get you results. The knowledge and skills you will need will be picked up along the way.
If a baby wanted to learn how to walk, it will never be able to do it by sitting there and analyzing how to walk. The best way for a baby to walk is to actually get up off its behind and start walking. Sure it may fall, but with every fall, it will learn what is working and what is not and adjust to it.
68.The writer thinks that learning .
A.stops us from doing things
B.prevents us from achieving a goal
C.should be combined with practice
D.means gathering more and more information
69.According to the passage, we had better learn from .

C.our experiencesD.full preparations
70.The passage implies that the more we learn, .
A.the less we will knowB.the more likely we are to succeed
C.the more we want to exploreD.the better preparations we will make
71.Why did the writer mention how a baby learns to walk?
A.To prove another point is untrue.B.To encourage the reader to change.
C.To introduce a learning approach.D.To support a conclusion.

For 170 years, members of a tiny American native tribe have lived and celebrated their traditions on a
small piece of land off the Louisiana coast called Isle de Jean Charles. They fished and they farmed, making living by hard work amid the bays and marshes(沼泽). But now the waters that have supported them are threatening to overwhelm(淹没)them.
“I don’t think we’re going to have any other choice except to leave because we’re getting washed away by every storm that comes by,” said Albert Naquin, chief of the Biloxi-Chitimacha tribe. “We have lost more and more land, and it keeps happening.”
Surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the marsh on the other, Isle de Jean Charles sits at the southern tip of Louisiana’s rapidly disappearing wetlands, an area that is 3 to 4 miles long and about a mile wide. The tribe has been living here since 1840. but about a football field worth of land in the region is lost every half hour because of erosion(侵蚀), storms and rising sea water-a constant process that is expected to worsen with climate change.
Isle de Jean Charles has been flooded five times in the last six years, being transformed from a once lush(繁茂的)landscape into a barren disaster zone. The floodwaters have spread large amounts of salt across the tiny island, making it nearly impossible for much to grow any more.
The road to their village has been flooded so often, and now only one narrow road is usable, which is often covered by water. The fire station was closed a few years ago, and the island’s church was relocated. Now, only 25 families are left, with a “few dozen” people. A controversial(有争议的)$900 million system of sea walls to save endangered communities along the Louisiana coast raised hopes here. But the final design did not include Isle de Jean Charles because officials concluded it simply would cost too much to protect the relatively few families that were left.
72.What would be the best title of the passage?
A.Climate change threatens an American native tribe
B.Decreasing population of an American native tribe
C.The survival of an American native tribe
D.The harmful effect of climate change
73.We learn from the third paragraph that .
A.only a football field worth of land remains for the tribe
B.the southern tip of the wetlands is now in water
C.the tribe is losing its land at a fast speed
D.the tribe has lived here for 300 years
74.What do we know about the remaining land of Isle de Jean Charles?
A.It still remains rich and beautiful.
B.It is almost unsuitable for crops to grow.
C.There’s no resident living on the land.
D.All of them have been covered by water.
75.The last paragraph suggests that .
A.the govemment has paid much attention to the tribe
B.the tribe insists on remaining where they are
C.the fate of the tribe remains dangerous
D.the tribe has a large population
A “Green” Christmas spirit is upon us this year and it seems like everyone is wondering which kind of Christmas tree serves eco-friendly the best this year.
One of the concepts that I have seen this year is whether to purchase a real Christmas tree or an artificial tree. Which one is more “Green”? People are leaning in the wrong direction when they assume that the artificial Christmas tree poses less of a threat to the Earth.
The truth of the matter is, if you have to have a tree this year(because the greenest option is no tree) the real tree is far more eco-friendly than the fake one. Why? Most of the artificial trees are made of PVC. Beyond the fact that the creation of PVC emits nasty gases into the atmosphere, this plastic is definitely not recyclable, which means that you should throw away artificial trees and bury them in land-and that is something that eco-conscious people want to steer away from.
If you want to take your sustainable Christmas tree, find a local organic Christmas tree farm. They don’t use the harmful pesticides and chemicals. You will want to start thinking and planning ahead in order to locate the best place to purchase your “Green” Christmas tree. Don’t forget to figure out what you will do with your tree after the holiday is over as well.
Here are some Earth-friendly ways to dispose of your real tree this year:
1)If you purchased the tree at an organic tree farm and you are sure that it wasn’t treated with harmful chemicals, think about dumping it into s small lake or pond. It can offer a wonderful new play land for fish.
2)Most cities gather trees on a certain day after Christmas. Be sure to call your local township and ask them if and when they do this prior to the holidays.
3)You could replant it, however you will need to make sure that you choose the right tree and have enough roots to make this option work.
Planning ahead is the key to hosting a Green Christmas this year. Map out where you will purchase your tree and where and how you will dispose of it prior to Christmas in order to achieve the most sustainable plans. You don’t have to go treeless to enjoy a Green Holiday Season…just make sure that you look into all of your options and choose the most sustainable option that is available in your area. Happy Holidays!
