Feeling left out?
A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. But how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation(欣赏)to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with. Act friendly, and say “Hi, can I play, too?” or just join in.
If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before she left. You can introduce her to your new friends!

Which hand do you use when you eat, write and carry things? If your answer is your left hand, then happy Left-handers Day to you on August 13. The day came into our life in 1976. It was to let more people know the life problems of left-handers. They had to get used to using right-handed things.
In the past, some parents thought that it was bad if their kids were left-handed. And they might ask them to use their right hands. However, it is not bad to be a left-hander now. The left side of our brain is where we deal with problems. The right side of our brain is where our creativity comes from. Right-handers usually use the left side of the brain more than the right side. But left-handers seem to use both sides more evenly(平均地) than right-handers. So some scientists say that these left-handers are more creative and more imaginative.
Although there are fewer left-handed people in the world, some of them are geniuses. German-born US scientist Albert Einstein, British physicist Isaac Newton and British biologist Charles Darwin are some famous left-handers. At least six US presidents were left-handed, such as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Former Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao is also a left-hander. But left-handers need to be careful when they go to countries like Indonesia. People there think their left hands are unclean because they use them when visiting the toilet. So Indonesians never use their left hands to eat.
66. Left-handers Day is on _____________.
   A. October 25    B. January 13      C. September 21     D. August 13
67. Why did people set up the left-handers day?

   B. To let more people know the trouble left-handers have in life.
   C. To make more people know there are fewer left-handers.
   D. To let people think about the life problems of right-handers.
68. Which of the following is TRUE about the use of our brain?
   A. We use the left side of our brain to create things.
   B. Usually the right side of our brain works out problems.
   C. Left-handers use the right side of the brain more than right-handers.
   D. Left-handers are better at dealing with problems than right-handers.
69. All the following people are left-handers EXCEPT _____.
   A. Albert Einstein  B. Xi Jinping    C. Charles Darwin    D. Barack Obama
70. What problems might left-handers meet when in Indonesia?

六、任务型阅读(20分)
阅读下列短文,根据短文内容填写表格,每空限填一词。(每小题1分,满分10分)
Two days ago, I had taken a test in Biology, and I knew that I would get my scores in the same class today.
After the bell rang, every student sat in his or her seat impatiently. Then, one by one, the teacher called our names.
As each paper was given back to the correct student, the front of the answer paper would always be turned to face the ground and the paper itself would be slightly folded (折叠) to prevent anyone from seeing.
In fact, folding each test paper is a way to make sure that each student sees only his or her own scores. The scores are seen as private information not to be announced or shown to others. As a way to keep the students’ score records secret, each student is given an online account (账号). Each student can use it to check his or her grades on the official school website.
Protecting students’ private information always comes first in US schools that want to free students from unnecessary pressure(压力). School reports are guarded closely to prevent poor grades from damaging a student’s dignity and reputation (尊严和声誉), which are for himself or herself only.
However, some insist that although students’ feelings and self-dignity are easily hurt, they cannot be forever protected. They say that school also teaches their students to make themselves stronger in mind, and the classroom should show the reality of competition in society. Scores that everyone can see might better encourage students to work harder to be better than others.

七、阅读表达(10分)
阅读下列短文,回答问题(不得超过5个词)
One Saturday afternoon, Tom and his sister, Viv, were having tea in a café. Tom was telling Viv about his history project. “On Monday I am giving a speech in front of the class. It will be about famous inventions,” Tom told Viv. “Let’s go to the public library and find a book on inventions,” suggested Viv. “We’ll call the library first to see what time it closes.”
They walked over to an old telephone box and went inside. Just as Viv was about to ring ‘1888’, the number for Directory Enquiries(电话号查询台), there was a loud crash outside the phone box. A woman had dropped her shopping bags.
Viv dialed the number. When she had finished, the telephone box started shaking, and a loud noise filled their ears. The shopping centre disappeared, and everything went dark. Suddenly there was a big bump. The telephone box stopped shaking and everything was quiet. Tom and Viv looked out of the window. They couldn’t believe their eyes! They were in the middle of a large field. Tom pushed the door and stepped outside.
“This is amazing!” he said. “I think we’ve travelled through time.” Suddenly some men on horses appeared. They were wearing strange clothes. They saw the children and started riding towards them, shouting.
“Let’s get out of here!” Tom shouted. They ran back inside and closed the door behind them.
“Those men look like people from the past,” Tom said. “You dialed the number ‘1888’ for Directory Enquiries. If we dial ‘2018’, perhaps we’ll return home.”
Tom dialed the number. He was nervous, however, and dialed ‘3010’ by mistake. The telephone box started shaking again, and the field disappeared. There was another large bump. Looking outside, the children saw strange buildings and cars. A face suddenly appeared outside the window. The person had three eyes! Viv shouted with fear.
“I don’t want to be in the future. I want to go home,” said Viv. Tom quickly dialed ‘2018’. Soon they were back in the shopping centre. Outside, a woman was picking up some shopping bags that she had dropped. Tom recognized the woman. “We’re back! Let’s help that woman with her shopping bags,” he said.
“Thank you. You’re very kind,” the woman replied to Tom’s offer of help.
She turned to look at the children. Tom and Viv jumped in horror. The woman had three eyes…
